The Algarve is the least Portuguese part of Portugal. It is overrun by the English, and it's not very pleasant. The beaches are abolutely stunning, but the rest, well, it's a touristic paradise.

Porto is very, very crowded also, but it's such a cool city. Go north or south along the coast there, and inland from Porto. Stunning.

EvorA and Monsaraz are worth a visit. The |Silver Coast. Up to the Northern border with Spain. I, personally, would not bother with the Algarve.

Portugal is a stunning country and completely worth a trip. After 5 and a half years here, there are still places I want to visit and places I would happily return to again and again.
