BREAKING: Donald Trump's Border Czar takes a page from his boss's book and "chickens out" by announcing that he will not carry out his threat to arrest California Governor Gavin Newsom amidst the brutal ICE crackdowns.
Newsom called his bluff and Tom Homan caved...
"Well, that whole thing's been taken out of context," Homan claimed to CBS News. "They haven't crossed a line yet but like any other U.S. citizen if you cross that line, I don't care who they are: the governor, the mayor, whatever... When you commit a crime against ICE officers, we will seek prosecution."
The irony, of course, is that this lawless administration is led by a convicted felon and adjudicated rapist who mass pardoned the January 6th insurrectionists. Trump and Homan don't believe in "law and order," they believe in raw fascist power.
"So this whole thing is just a bunch of noise basically? Because you're not claiming that Gavin Newsom has done anything to impede ICE officers?" asked host John Dickerson.
"Well, I'll leave that up to DOJ but what I'm saying right now is when someone commits a crime we'll ask the Department of Justice to investigate and prosecute," said Homan. "So I'm not a prosecutor so we'll hand it over to DOJ but right now there's no intention to arrest the governor right now. I don't know if he crossed that line."
"But you don't have any more evidence that he crossed the line than that I did?" asked Dickerson.
"No, I don't have evidence that he crossed the line at this point," said Homan. "What I simply said: if and when he crosses that line then we'll seek prosecution."
The rhetorical retreat comes after Trump himself urged Homan to carry out the authoritarian arrest, stating that "I'd do it if I were Tom" and that "Gavin likes the publicity, but I think it would be a great thing."
Newsom himself has stood tall throughout all of this back and forth, defying Homan at every step.
“Come after me, arrest me. Let’s just get it over with, tough guy, you know? I don’t give a damn," Newsom previously said. “But I care about my community. I care about this community.”
"The hell are they doing? These guys need to grow up," he added. "They need to stop, and we need to push back. And I’m sorry, to be so clear, but that kind of bloviating is exhausting. So, Tom, arrest me. Let’s go."
Newsom stood up to the bullies and Newsom won.
