. Summer has been much better than Spring, and today was notably good. Got down to my favorite river spot which has not been the hot spot it was last year for some reason (lower water levels?), but I love it there. Bright sun and warm - fall leaves coming down. I was there Monday and found a nice bunch of Chicken of the Woods so I wanted to get back and pluck a little of it. Usually from the trail in I take my fishing upriver to a riffle and work down, but last time I found it better to the downriver way so that's the way I went. Not too bad, caught a couple of nice ones, one or two others then reach the spot where the Chicken was. Decided that it wasn't going to run off so thought I'd take a few more casts with my 4" Dinger in the Mardi Gras color. Good thought it was too. I've found at this time of year drifting Dingers on open hook with little twitches is a good producer. I see the line deflect, wait a second or 2, reel down and strike. Got weight, pulling hard, pulling drag - work her in to near enough to see ... WOW!
. I'm wading mid thigh and normally just play them in and hand land them. Not this one - I work it into the shore praying she don't come off. Done....So large I lay it down gently and get an accurate measure - 20.5 inches.
Slim fish as are most river Smallies so it isn't the 4+ lbs the length might suggest but an easy 3.5+, which is the largest Smallie I've ever caught in the river.
. Saw a mom bear and her 2 cubs crossing the river further down. Might be that same little family I had seen earlier in the year near the same spot. Beautiful day all around really.
. Oh, and the fishing day started so nicely perhaps setting a tone.
I opened the front door to let the day in and was just pulling my pants one when my neighbor calls in "Hi Holliday".
. There she is standing in these mini short black lace frill panty things making Daisey Duke look like a girl in bloomers. Daisey got nothing on this girl from the waist down, which is pretty much what she had on. Oh, these end days of Summer.
. Now I will make the Chicken o the Woods.
Keep a candle burning
