It was always the USA/NATO's plan to provoke Russia into a war with Ukraine.
Russia began the special military operation to:
1) Stop Ukraine from continuing its slaughter of its own ethnic Russian citizens in the Donbas region, something it'd been doing since the USA-facilitated Maidan coup in 2014.
2) Prevent Ukraine from becoming a NATO country directly on Russia's border. At the "end" of the cold war NATO promised not to expand and then broke that promise many times over. Russia has always been clear and firm in its position that a NATO country on its border would be a militarily hostile act and treated accordingly.
Russia and Ukraine had a peace agreement, called the Minsk Accords, that western politicians have since admitted was never serious and was only used as a delaying tactic to scale up Ukraine's military posture.
Russia and Ukraine were close to finalizing a peace agreement in 2022 but agents of NATO, most notably Boris Johnson, intervened to ensure the talks never concluded successfully. In that agreement hostilities would end provided that the Donbas region would become independent and Ukraine would pledge not to seek NATO membership.
After repeated bad-faith negotiations and military escalations by Ukraine Russia did what it had to do for its own security and the security of the Donbas' inhabitants.
It's common knowledge USA/NATO involvement in Ukraine is long-standing and has always had the goal of luring Russia into a protracted costly proxy war that would weaken Russia militarily and make it more vulnerable to regime change via western-sponsored destabilization efforts and economic warfare (sanctions/seizures/etc.).
Ukraine is merely a pawn to be sacrificed in 'Murica's game of global hegemony.
Anyone telling you different is lying.
