A ketogenic diet (KD), which is high in fat and low in carbohydrates, may have potential benefits for cognitive function in individuals with dementia, including Alzheimer's disease. The brain, which typically relies on glucose for energy, can also utilize ketone bodies, produced during ketosis, as an alternative fuel source. This is particularly relevant in Alzheimer's, where glucose metabolism is often impaired. By providing ketones, a KD may help improve cognitive function and potentially slow down the progression of dementia.
