Brazilians were pissed off at Argentinians for starting something over a stupid meaningless island and they were afraid that shit would spill all over us.

Brazil was facing economical woes in the early 80's and that war only made things much worse.

And after that, Maradona spiked the water of a Brazilian player during the World Cup in 1990.

When Brazilians teams go to Argentina, they stay in front of the hotels doing noise the whole night to keep the players from sleeping, but both countries still have a strong friendship, it doesn't go beyond soccer.

However, like you said, they have a strong sense of pride for some reason. I've seen them saying terrible things about Brazil on the web, it seems like they are extremely racist and they despise the way Brazil deals with poverty.
