After 91 hours under the debris, rescue workers freed 4-year-old Ayda Gezgin this morning. The girl was trapped under the remains of an apartment complex in the Turkish city of Izmir, after Friday's devastating earthquake. She was taken to hospital.
Eyewitnesses saw how the girl was carried to an ambulance, wrapped in an isolation blanket, according to AP news agency. Rescue workers and bystanders clapped and shouted "God is great". Rescue worker Nusret Aksoy told reporters present that he heard a child screaming. Shortly after, the girl could be located next to a dishwasher. Ayda waved to him, told him her name, and said she was "okay".
The girl's miraculous rescue comes the day after a 3-year-old and a 14-year-old were also recovered alive from the rubble. Meanwhile, the death toll is rising: the earthquake has now claimed 102 lives. Rescue teams are busy recovering bodies in Izmir, Turkey's third city. Nearly a thousand people were injured. The earthquake also had an impact on the Greek island of Samos, where 2 teenagers died and 19 people were injured.
Some 8,000 people and 25 rescue dogs are assisting in the disaster. More than 3,500 tents and 13,000 beds have been provided to provide temporary shelter for people. According to government agencies, there are still 147 victims in the hospital, three of them in critical condition.
