Why do Pu, Breaky, and a few others keep asking people if they have mittens?

Here in North America it's Spring for crying out loud.
Why the fuck would I be carrying around mittens this time of year?

If it was just a regional thing I could understand but this doesn't seem to be the case.

What? We call them gloves here in Australia. I can’t stand anything on my hands. I even wear my wedding ring on a chain. I was thinking about getting myself a ring tattoo.
