The reason is, that in the past there were less people admitting to be homosexual. In those past times it was expected from a man to marry a woman, regardless of any of their feelings.
That's the main reason that homosexuality "did not exist". In current times people dare to be open about it, so more people reveal they are homosexuals. I's not something that came recently, it was there already for a long long time.

Interesting is that also among animals cases of homosexuality have been observed. So it is not even limited to humans.
