Oklahoma classrooms must have a Bible, state superintendent says
The Bible must be incorporated into public Oklahoma classroom curriculums effective immediately, according to a new directive the state's superintendent announced Thursday.
Why it matters: The order is the latest move amid growing white to challenge the country's long-held doctrine of separation of church and state and seek public funding of religion in schools amid a conservative supermajority U.S. Supreme Court.
- The Bible memorandum, announced in a state board of education , requires every public school classroom to have a Bible. Some classes will be required to teach from it.
- It's unclear which grades will be impacted by the mandate, though the reported that a memo outlining the plan listed fifth through 12th grade as an example where teaching may occur.
