Shitty story about Portuguese business

We're in NY to visit family. Something similar happened when we were here in the summer. My phone is Portuguese. My husband's phone is American, so it's different. I went to Vodafone in Portugal, the company I have a contract with, before we left for the US. I specifically asked for a roaming plan that I could use while in NY. The woman there signed me up for it on my phone while I watched. I had been told by her, and by a guy on the phone, that it would cost me 3 euros and 20 cents a day, plus the cost of my monthly plan, which is 25 euros.

So, I used my phone for several phone calls and several texts yesterday. By the end of the day, they texted me to tell me they had charged me 100 euros for one day of roaming charges. I called them, from my computer, and the woman told me, "Yes, you incurred 100 euros worth of roaming fees, and that other plan, we know nothing about that." I argued and argued, to no avail.

I told her when I get back to Portugal I would file a complaint in the complaint book. This is a major threat in Portugal. The complaint book is used nationally and businesses suffer consequences when they get put into the complaint book. So we shall see what happens.

In the meantime, I cannot even look at my phone for fear of getting some random roaming fee. Taking the sim card out.

Fuck Vodafone. Which is a British company.

Several years ago, I bought another phone just for the states. I sign up for service for a month at a time when I’m there. I do this for the same BS you describe.

Yes. I need to do that. This must be a new thing they are doing. In August and now are the only times it's happened. Unbelievable. Like they think I'm going to pay 1400 euros to use my phone here for 2 weeks?

Look into Tracfones

No, Tracfone cell phones do not work in Europe or outside of the United States, Puerto Rico, or the U.S. Virgin Islands. Tracfone does not allow international text messages or roaming.

However, you can still connect to Wi-Fi hotspots while traveling internationally, which allows you to use social media or Wi-Fi messaging apps to contact loved ones.
