Even if some of the worst things happen...taking steps back the defeat isn't permanent. I thought of the Chileans and what they suffered through with their country's coup d'etat and Pinochet's 17 years of dictatorship. The people came back.

verse

Con cenizas, con desgarros
With ashes, with tears,
Con nuestra altiva impaciencia
With our haughty impatience,
Con una honesta conciencia
With an honest conscience,
Con enfado, con sospecha
With anger, with suspicion,
Con activa certidumbre
With active certainty
Pongo el pie en mi país
I set foot in my country.

verse

Pongo el pie en mi país
I set foot in my country.
Y en lugar de sollozar
And instead of sobbing,
De moler mi pena al viento
To grind my sorrow to the wind,
Abro el ojo y su mirar
I open my eye and his look
Y contengo el descontento
And I contain the discontent.

chorus

Vuelvo hermoso, vuelvo tierno
I come back beautiful, I come back tender,
Vuelvo con mi espera dura
I return with my hard wait,
Vuelvo con mis armaduras
I return with my armors,
Con mi espada, mi desvelo
With my sword, my sleeplessness,
Mi tajante desconsuelo
My emphatic grief,
Mi presagio, mi dulzura
My omen, my sweetness,
Vuelvo con mi amor espeso
I return with my thick love,
Vuelvo en alma y vuelvo en hueso
I come back in soul and I come back in bone
A encontrar la patria pura
To find the pure homeland
Al fin del último beso
At the end of the last kiss.

verse

Vuelvo al fin sin humillarme
I return at last without humiliating myself,
Sin pedir perdón ni olvido
Without asking for forgiveness or forgetting:
Nunca el hombre está vencido
Man is never defeated
Su derrota es siempre breve
His defeat is always brief,
Un estímulo que mueve
A stimulus that moves
La vocación de su guerra
The vocation of his war,
Pues la raza que destierra
Well, the race that banishes
Y la raza que recibe
And the race that receives
Le dirán al fin que él vive
They will finally tell him that he lives
Dolores de toda tierra
Sorrows of all land.

chorus

Vuelvo hermoso, vuelvo tierno
I come back beautiful, I come back tender,
Vuelvo con mi espera dura
I return with my hard wait,
Vuelvo con mis armaduras
I return with my armors,
Con mi espada, mi desvelo
With my sword, my sleeplessness,
Mi tajante desconsuelo
My emphatic grief,
Mi presagio, mi dulzura
My omen, my sweetness,
Vuelvo con mi amor espeso
I return with my thick love,
Vuelvo en alma y vuelvo en hueso

True, although I don't know if Americans have that same kind of resilience and heart. Well, not all Americans, anyway.
