The Spaniards have got their shit together as far as great houses and architecture goes. Probably the best houses I have ever consistently seen.

Yes, a lot of buildings in Santa Barbara (I lived there for four years) especially Hope Ranch (named after Bob Hope who developed the area and turned it into a millionaires paradise) or Montecito (suburb of Santa Barbara where families like the Kennedys have vacation homes and where JFK and his wife went on honeymoon in the 1950's) look like that.

A big problem in Santa Barbara is lot size. So much of it is zoned for giant lots for McMansions and the few smaller lot areas are mostly tiny places built in the 1920's. If you want regular sized houses or apartments you have to go to areas like Goleta, Isla Vista, Gaviota, or even further out (Lompoc, Santa Maria, etc...). The areas over the Santa Ynez mountains in the Santa Ynez Valley is mostly zoned agricultural and used mainly grape vineyards, cattle ranches, or specialty farming. That just doesn't leave a lot of space to build housing for the middle class. Ventura County's coastal areas was developed in the 1940's and 1950's for the middle class where as all the most desirable areas in Santa Barbara's South coast were designed specifically for the wealthy upper class. That is why people like Ronald Reagan, Michael Jackson, Oprah Windfrey, Bob Hope, and the like lived or live there.
