I have to pay taxes in the US and Portugal, and I can't even call the IRS. What do I get for my tax dollars, exactly?

Do you draw a pension or social sec?
You may have to pay Uncle Sam anyway.

You can vote. You like to vote.
Less travel restrictions if you want to visit the US?

PS: You may wish to move back one day, even if you don't think so now.

I wouldn’t IF you have that option esp with the Dem clowns leading the way. Question? You can’t just give that up, can you? What a sad world that a US citizen wouldn’t want to remain ONE.

Why do you have to pay taxes to the USA?

As long as you retain US citizenship you have to file taxes in the US, whether or not you earn money. I have some income from the US, so I pay taxes.

In three years, I can say fuck you to the USA if I choose.

LB. Don’t you take advantage of the tax benefit for living offshore, and the fact that you can file later in the year? As for calling the IRS. Why not use SKYPE? I’d never give my citizenship

I do use Skype. They keep telling me that they're not answering the phone.

Yeah, I don't have to file till June here, but I need my US taxes done by then. I need some info and I need to get my online account operational. I can't do that online because they want to text a code to the phone number on file, which I no longer have. Or mail it to my US address. I can't even call them to switch to my Portuguese address, because they're not answering the phone and I can't access my online account, which I need to talk to them about, but they're not answering the phone.

I did reach them on the phone once, and they told me that, due to the pandemic, they were only answering certain kinds of questions, and they simply refused to answer the question I had. After being on hold for almost an hour. WTF.

The accountant I used for 20 years, told me in 2019 he would not do my taxes anymore. As I understand all US accountants are to report any ill regularities to the IRS. Because we live offshore is an ill regularity. Same with a broker I had. He told me If I continued to live offshore, he couldn’t offer his services any more. I had to find another accountant here, who is a US citizen. She filed my taxes on June 10th, 2020. So far no issues. Why not just file them as is?

That's why I'm having issues. Only my accountant died. I have to access info on the site. I don't have everything I need to file because my accountant died.

Yeah. A lot of brokerage firms don't let you live overseas. I know people here who use fake IP addresses so they can keep their brokerage accounts.

So I was supposed to address the death of my accountant before it happened? And I was supposed to expect a pandemic that would cause the IRS to stop answering their phones? Both? Damn! I am stupid because I'm not psychic. Silly me.

You have no fucking idea how much paperwork is involved in emigrating. Judge not, you areshole.

LB relax. Just file your taxes. If they find what you’ve filed as inaccurate, they will notify you, or not. Probably not. I’ve always filed on time and never had an issue. Sweet dreams.

The sms thing is super annoying. Try calling someone stateside and have them tell you the code.

Also, it costs a fair smount to renounce citizenship. I wouldn't advise that unless you are rich.
