Now many, if not all of you having watched Sorcerer, are no doubt wondering how the bridge scenes were filmed.
...and since googling is too hard for you, I've done the hard work for you:
The legendary bridge scene in William Friedkin’s 1977 thriller Sorcerer was filmed entirely using massive, practical effects without any CGI or miniatures. [, ]
Building the Bridge
- Production designer John Box designed an elaborate, rickety-looking suspension bridge built over a real river.
- The structure cost $1 million (roughly $6 million today) and took three months to construct.
- It featured hidden hydraulic systems, metallic supports beneath the wood, and frayed ropes that concealed strong steel cables.
- Real trucks carrying the volatile cargo were invisibly tethered to the bridge so they would sway, tilt, and dip dramatically without completely capsizing into the water. [, , , ]
Relocating Due to Droughts
- Filming initially began over a river in the Dominican Republic, but an unexpected drought caused the deep river to dry down to just a trickle of water. [, ]
- The production was forced to dismantle, ship, and completely rebuild the $1 million bridge at another location in Mexico, costing another $1 million and months of delays. [, ]
