It's common for Mexican Americans that have been here for several generations to no longer speak Spanish. I don't blame her for that. There was the old belief that in order to be fully American you had to give up your culture of origin. Thank goodness, that thinking has diminished.

I have a lot of cousins that don't speak Spanish. They wish they could speak it, but they do understand it.

Mexicans come in all shades, just saying...we have some gueros in the family too.

Didn't change anything but create dislike and distrust of white people.

So, he made sure we spoke Spanish growing up. It's been a blessing to speak two languages.

There is something about the tall, dark and handsome gentleman raised in a machismo dominant culture rich with history that just does it for me.

We are surprisingly traditionalists in my biracial relationship. However, Alfonso is 90% Mexican (3rd generation on mom’s side and 1st on Dad’s) and 10% Chinese because they fled to Mexico after the railroad was built and we booted them out here.

Caskur pointed out years ago that my attraction to Latinos had more to do with improving my children’s biology and resistance to the sun more than anything else. I’m lily white and Alphonso jokes that I’m northern euro albino lol I found her theory to be fascinating and have pondered it on several occasions.

It’s harder to be proud as a white woman and not be misconstrued as a white supremacist in this climate. Perhaps I’m just more comfortable celebrating Latin culture in mixed company.
