Do you guys know why Hef decided on bunnies as the mascot?

He had a whole super ick creepy statement about it.

Never heard that, no. Do share, Dovey!

In the man's actual words

" “The rabbit, the bunny, in America has a sexual meaning; and I chose it because it’s a fresh animal, shy, vivacious, jumping – sexy. First, it smells you then it escapes, then it comes back, and you feel like caressing it, playing with it. A girl looks a lot like a bunny, playful and joking. If you look at the girl we made popular: the Playmate of the Month. She is never sophisticated, a girl you cannot really have. She is a young, healthy, simple girl – the girl next door . . . we are not interested in the mysterious, difficult woman, the femme fatale, who wears elegant underwear, with lace, and she is sad, and somehow mentally filthy. The Playboy girl has no lace, no underwear, she is naked, well-washed with soap and water, and she is happy.”"

Yep. Creepy isnt it?

Then consider how often he used pictures without consent(Marilyn Monroe, Vanna White).

And that whole Sugar and Spice shit where he featured MINORS. Like TEN year old Brooke Sheilds.

Playboy has a very dark history. And Hef tried to make himself a feminist.... trying to spin it as sexual revolution of women "breaking free" of conservative values and expectations. But it was definately more about what MEN want.(not that anything is wrong with what men want mind you....it was just VERY one sided)

Hef was a very manipulative, abusive person(emotional and mental abuse....he wasnt violent that we know of).

Hmm... looking more closely at her letter of acceptance, I now see me Ma was just a handful of weeks shy of her 26th birthday when she was hired. I always thought she was 27. She was still 25. Not that old for a Bunny, I'm guessing. Or is it?

Your mother was real attractive. Even in 2021 she would be attractive. You definitely share a likeness to her.

Playboy preferred them very young.

Did you ever read how Gloria Steinmen(?) became a bunny in an undercover journalist mission? I'm no fan of hers.....but I support what she did there assuming she did it for women and not the fame it brought her.

Miscellaneous glamour shots at the dawn of the "Me" decade.

I don't think my mother has seen these photos in ages. I should e-mail them to her.

I want to say "Crikey!" but, really, I'm not surprised. Men's view of women at the time is plain to see on the lurid covers of pulp crime novels and in ads for Maytag appliances. Talking 'bout the late Fifties here.

That Hef quote always makes me feel like I need to wash it off after I read it :LOL3:

And I'm definitely the "difficult" woman. I wash with soap though.

Yeah, I read her essay.

She exposed the distinctly unglamorous side of the business. Apparently, Hef was disappointed she never went to him for another side of the story.

But that's just the point; this was an exposé from the Bunny side, not from penis side.

My mother has never said anything bad about her stint. She says she made friends and that, although the work was sometimes hard (especially on the lower back), it paid extremely well. Only once, apparently, did the manager try to come on to her and she flat out rejected the advance. She says that kind of abuse was rare.

Funny thing, when she left my father in 1970, she was raking in twice his salary just in tips. She gave him a monthly payment without fail (and without any kind of legal paperwork) seeing as he kept custody of we wee ones by mutual agreement. It was an amiable separation.

I dont know about Canada, but here in the states wealthy esteemed customers were given a specail key, and that key permitted them to chose a waitress(a "bunny") to sleep with. And if they didnt do it, they would be fired for a totally unrelated reason.

Of course.....the entire sex industry has a very dark underbelly. Playboy is probably the tamest.. outside of that foul "Sugar and Spice" thing that was essentially child porn.

I'm glad your mother had a good experience and got out while she was winning. It's always good to leave the table while you are ahead, kwim?

Aw, thanks, man. :ThumbsUp1:

Her beauty, she says opened a lot of doors for her but it also closed a lot of others.

Seems people intuitively mistrust beautiful people.

I blame Marilyn Manson.

Me Ma said she'd heard about this, too, but she also said that was a myth. The rules at Playboy were extremely strict (violations resulted in "demerit points" being added to a Bunny's file... too many demerits and you were out the door).

The first rule of the Playboy Club: no "fraternizing" with patrons. Doing so led to instant dismissal. They had a "squeaky clean" brand image to protect.

Could there have been exceptions from unscrupulous managers working as shadow pimps? Sure. But they would also get the boot if found out.

I'm gonna say it was true in the states. I heard this from reliable sources in New Orleans....and after seeing what goes on in the shadows in other clubs(like Penthouse and Hustler) i wouldnt doubt it.

Of course I wasn't there so I cant say it absolutely happened. Some say it was a myth, others swear it was true. If it were true....it definitely happened in New Orleans lol

HEY Blurt- I gotta better way for you ta make money offa those pics n material.

Will give the formula to ya free of charge too eh?

Until then hang on to yer pics and don't show off any more of em.

Yer wasting a gold mine imho.

Aw'ight, @Joe !

I've scanned more pix of the maternal unit. How do you want to do this? Do you want me to just PM them to you? Unless folks here are interested in taking a peek, I can't really see the point in posting them in a thread about members' "past lives," given that me Ma isn't a member.

I think I'll sell them to you for the low, low price of $10/pic.

Damn but this reminds me of my early days of high school; my little brother used to sell photos of my mother to his classmates for two bits a pop (and I used to sell condoms from my father's secret stash in the garage for a dime a pack to the older kids in the park). We were entrepreneurs before we had pubic hair.

And, as it turns out, Joe, you were right; now that I'm plunging a little deeper in all this ancient Playboy family history, it turns out my mother not only was not the only Bunny with a black costume but it looks like she occasionally wore other colours as well. Learn something new every day, I guess.

Joe, thanks, but no thanks.

I'm just looking to share my pride in the woman that bore me and, if doing so provides others with an esthetic pleasure, so much the better.

That $10/pic comment was a joke. I'm not in high school anymore (although hangjng out here can sometimes make me feel like I am); I'm not looking to sell anything.

You remind me of some shady dude standing on the corner at midnight wearing a trench coat accosting teenaged passersby with a "Psst! Hey, kid! Wanna see some retro cheesecake shoots?"

Don't be so icky, Joe.

Foreinstance Blurt the above is an outstanding piece of Graphic Design.
Very stunning imho.

Stuff like the above would be highly captivating if it was compiled in a book.

You may think it's not interesting but many would find it so.

But I understand it's probably too personal to you.

But it wouldn't have to be about showing off human bodies. Or people.

Just the memorabilia alone is interesting.

Anyways the only thing I'd comment on is you need a better scanner and you have to find a way to watermark those photos.

I like this photo of your Mother the most, Blurt.

Cuz it's the most 'retro' of the bunch.

There's an innocence about the photo which reflects the time it was shot in.

Woman/girls just don't pose like that anymore.

Looks really vintage with what appears to be a Hudson's Bay Jacket

Like their blankets - truly Canadian, eh?

It was, indeed, a Hudson's Bay coat.

Post your shit, Joe, or GTFO!

OK.

Here's a video of me at one of those Occupy Concerts 10 years ago, Blurt:

I'm among the spectators walking around in the crowd that day. You should able to see me at some point in the video. I was very close to the tent where a girl died when this band called DOA ( Dead On Arrival) led by a Joey Shithead went on the stage to begin their act.

And he announced her death too, eh.

It was somewhat of an historical moment, if ya know what I mean, eh Blurt?

My cyber relationship with Blurt in these forums can be summed up thus, Dovey...

...that Blurt iz sure a Grumpy Gus at times, eh? No fun, no fun at all.

I don't know if you've noticed but Blurt gets annoyed very easily, eh?

You've never seen me annoyed, Joe.

I don't get annoyed.

I'm innately unannoyable.

And I rarely get angry but, when I do, I go epic.

You'll know I'm angry when you notice you have a flat tire and two missing fingers.

Never happened, never will.

I'll own "grumpy," though. It's one of my more lovable traits, along with my boundless empathy and that mole on my calf that Gordy Gambino kept salivating over.
