You're lucky you didn't have WebTV/MSNTV.
Imagine all that, plus a javascript audioscope that if done incorrectly (intentionally in some cases) crashed your machine at the first sound activating the audioscope.

Some days browsing the alt.discuss.* newsgroups was like tap-dancing through a mine field.
