"Abused"? Or perhaps "Neglected "? Seriously, you don't seem to be in a place to be a good guardian or parent. Skip the cat and concentrate on improving yourself, your life, and building an actual career. Clear up your legal problems. That would be my suggestion which I do not expect you to take.

The reality is owning pets is expensive to do right. The food costs money, the vet bills cost money, and just proper care and grooming costs money. Heck, if you are drunk or drugged out or picked up by the police for several days then you really can't care for a pet. You strike me as a guy with limited resources and larger issues which you should probably sort out first.
