I worked with a limo driver whose brakes failed on a downhill stretch of a highway. Luckily he didn't die or get injured but the stretch limo was totaled. I suppose that was largely the company's fault.

However, he might have also been going too fast as well. Brakes on heavy vehicles can fail at any time. That is why large vehicles should avoid downhill slopes whenever possible and travel at slower speeds on them too.

Driving commercially is a somewhat hazardous occupation.

This truck drivers verdict wasn't. I do this work. I've trucked all throughout the Western States and Western Canada. My advice? Stay far away from trucking. You're better off working at McDonald's, where you'll earn a higher wage, and won't get royally fucked should you make a mistake.

One single mistake in trucking could lead to disastrous results, and in Canada and the US, the fault always falls 100% on the driver. The company itself is always isolated, even if it played a part.

It's a rotten industry, filled with rotten players lowballing each other, who in turn hire rotten minimum wage drivers, to do rotten minimum wage work.

I don't know exactly how his brakes failed, and have never had to ditch a truck myself, but this can happen two ways: The brakes will kinda feel like they're gradually failing to the driver, or they'll 'abruptly' fail. A loaded truck going down a steep grade will pick up speed like you couldn't imagine. You'd have to actually drive one to understand just how brutal gravity can work.

I'm guessing he thought he could maybe 'ride it out', and would be able to slow down at the bottom of the hill. Or he simply was too stunned to make the decision to use the runaway. When you're flying down a hill with no brakes, these would be split second decisions that truck drivers are not trained for. Pilots get trained for this shit. Truckers do not.

We are expected to 'learn as we go' in this industry, which often doesn't work out well.

If you geared down to first gear - I mean one gear at a time until you get to first - what would the maximum speed be?

Also, the guy must have had options to crash...take it into the side of the mountain or whatever. As a motorcyclist, I know that there are times where we should choose to dump our bike and suffer serious injuries rather that risk going airborne and being killed.
