Well being a responsible dog owner is a must for people owning pit bulls. Understanding you have a very strong animal with a strong bite that NEEDS to be trained very well would probably lower the amount of times a pit bites someone.

It's just not a dog for everyone, you know? I loved my pit bull. But he started showing signs when I got pregnant....aggresion towards my husband....so I had to rehome him. His behavior was reigned in very well and he lived a long healthy life. He went to seasoned dog owners to a farm house.

I'm sure no one is arguing these dogs do not have a especailly powerful bite. It's just more so that the dogs themselves can be really good pets for the right people.

The way the family reacted tells me this was not the first time the dog showed aggression to people. If I am right, then they should know they need better control of the dog.

At one point someone said "I am going to get a stick." I am not sure if that means they were going to get something to beat the dog, but that would be a very bad idea.

That's why I'm saying that only responsible dog owners should have them. Because they are stronger and have a nastier bite.

It's not a good idea if we start deciding who can have what based on whether its required, you know? Look at all the homes that have pit bulls that never have an issue at all.

It would be ideal if people seeking any pet used more discernment and those who adopt them out were a bit pickier. I think giving away free animals should be a crime because it enables animal abuse and neglect.

I gave someone their 50 bucks back and refused to give them one of my kittens because she texted me that she was going to take the kitten out of state to get her declawed. And after I sent her a bunch of info about why declawing is horrible for cats and suggestions on claw caps and clipping she still stuck to the declawing. So I told her no.

Dogs really need a proper amount of training and a family wants a family pet and choses a dog that strong they really need to be responsible and make sure its trained well. If it was trained well it wouldnt have responded aggressively to screams.

I won't own Pit Bulls, but if any dog I ever own ever did this to anyone unprovoked like this, it would be going for a little trip up the mountain that same day, where a 12 Gauge slug would instantly put it out of it's misery.

The dogs of the old bloodline, when the breeders bred them to be aggressive towards dogs, but not towards people, can be great pets. But any lines that have been bred to be aggressive towards people are dangerous. One problem is that you do not know what you are getting unless you are able to find a reputable breeder who has carefully selected people-friendly bloodlines.

I want to point out one thing that was said earlier in this thread that was wrong. LettuceButt said that the Pit Bull was used as a "nanny dog". That is not true of American breeds of Pit Bulls. I have seen a lot of people make the same false claim online. That reference should be made to Staffordshire Bull Terriers, which is basically a smaller version of the American Pit Bull Terrier (United Kennel Club) or the American Staffordshire Terrier (American Kennel Club). But because these dogs are smaller, they have never been bred to be used as security dogs, guards dogs, or attack dogs. In other words, they were never bred to show aggression towards people. They were, in fact, always bred to have a nice disposition towards people (much like the original APBT). They were, though, bred to be aggressive towards other dogs and other animals and can be little balls of destruction towards animals other than humans. Some bloodlines have had their intense animal aggression bred out of them, but all bloodlines of the Staffordshire Bull Terrier have been bred to be friendly towards people.

Bull Terriers (like the puppy in my profile pic) are another fighting breed that has been bred to be people friendly and the breed has never been "ruined" by being used as security dogs, guards dogs, or attack dogs.
