What really bothers me is that in the midst of all this shit, nobody is really doing anything.

I believe this is the biggest problem. One side has "evolved" too much and they can't come up with a reaction. And the other side, which still retains the same kind of animal behavior they've always had, sees that as a weakness and take advantage of it.
