But funny that you mentioned liability, because that was definitely a concern. A science teacher ordered the custom shark deterrent pattern straight away. He concurs with me.

I still get to surf isolated beaches that are a known hot spot. I’ll send a snap now...zoom in. I’m about 200m above sea level and that small left is actually 6ft plus today.

Not a silhouette to Bullsharks, they investigate up close and personal. As for a Great White, it will still come in close to investigate and even nudge against you in some instances, but they have a tendency to go deep and then power hard up into a vertical attack. I’m surfing shallow reef and rocky outcrops. But at the end of the day it gives me comfort knowing that the pattern may have a deterring effect. There are also new lighter devices that create electric fields that can be stuck under the surfboard (metallic stickers) connected to a battery source behind the tail pad, but they have mixed results. Purposely attracting a shark towards you, before would-be repelling, doesn’t seem like a good idea.

The ankle leash ones too...but they have a tendency to zap the wearer...

Some professional divers I knew in the Caribbean swore by nasty 2 dollar shop lemon dish detergent... the more nasty and Chinese the better.

If sharks rolled in, they'd squirt a whole bottle all around them and the sharks would fuck off quick.

She makes a point about great whites tho. Most surfers are bit because they are blind. Their skin is like sandpaper so they can bump their prey first to see if it bleeds. Most surfers bit bleed to death after one bite. They don’t come back after the first nibble because they don’t like humans… unless it’s HANGRY

The traditional dark wet suits are the worst though... make people look like seals.

Statistically speaking, one has more chance of surviving a Great White attack than a Bullshark because of exactly what you said. A Bullshark is relentless and just comes back for more.

Years ago, a friend of the family, was killed by a Bullshark in a bad way. His friends and girlfriend, whom were all surfing with him, had all caught waves and were paddling back up to the lineup when he was attacked. First one arm was chomped off, then a leg, then another leg, then the other arm before he was taken underwater. All the friends have the image of him screaming with one arm trying to get back on his board. Heavy hey?

Guy many years ago here was diving along the shore about 50 metres out in the Bay and a Port Jackson shark latched onto his leg. A smaller shark but it wouldn't let go, so the guy had to drag it up to the carpark, retrieve a spanner from his toolbox, and beat it on the head for a couple of minutes till it let go.... lulz

They say only the Great Hammerhead is a threat to humans. The other smaller species are more docile and not a danger, so they say. But their big schools can be disconcerting. Some over 200 sharks just cruising on the back line.

A snorkeller on the surface in black kicking water, from below can look like a seal to a white pointer...

Divers look like seals, surfers look like turtles from below. Both are top food sources for the big sharks.
