"The thinking is that he had been working his way south. Right now, for whatever reason, he seems to be remaining somewhat in that area," state police Lt. Col. George Bivens said.
Nearly 400 law enforcement officers are participating in the hunt for Cavalcante.
State police are working with county emergency management, U.S. Marshals, U.S. Customs and Border Patrol and a number of other agencies.
Bivens said tactical teams on the ground, along with helicopters and planes, are trying to sweep through different areas within the search perimeter to try to push Cavalcante out.
We're learning more about Cavalcante.
The lead investigator in the search said he escaped from authorities in Brazil after allegedly committing a murder there in 2017. He went into the jungle to evade capture and was never caught.
Cavalcante came to the U.S. illegally after fleeing Brazil to Puerto Rico. U.S. Marshals said he arrived on a boat in New York from Puerto Rico.
He was sentenced last month to life in prison for killing his ex-girlfriend in front of her children in 2021. According to prosecutors, he killed her to prevent her from telling police that he was wanted for the murder in Brazil.
