There is proof that poor whites worked for wealthy land owners, the were never slaves as you describe.
Same for blacks, some blacks even signed up to work for certain masters.
You also have to think of the time period, where there was hardly shit. There was no apartments, you owned land or you didnt. Land was king. So if you didnt have anything, you worked for a land owner. Usually the land owner would provide a place to sleep, and food, til the worker had enough money saved up to go out on his own. Whites and blacks did this. They "bought their freedom". Those were considered more so Indentured Servants. Then there were slaves, which accounts vary greatly. Some were treated well, some were not. But there were laws that would not allow a slave to be mistreated. Only punished if they did wrong. The South wanted to free the slaves actually, but did not know how to do safely. They wanted them to be educated first, and be able to support themselves, instead of throwing them out in the cold. So much info on this subject, but we are "taught" that it was all evil Southern white men that owned and whipped all the black people.
