'Best Linux Distro' really depends on what you want to use it for.

For an Intel iMac? I'd go with Linuxmint 22.2 if I was you. Your Intel iMac's hardware profile won't raise any red flags, and it'll do what you want.

Not on the same drive, though. Windows will nuke a GRUB bootloader with every update.

If you want to dual-boot, you need to install each OS on its own drive.

lots of nice mainstream software has linux versions now

Plus, most Linux alternatives are cross-platform. I used Krita even on Windows.

To be clear, "Linux" is an OS paradigm, not a single OS. Just like "Windows" is Windows 7, Windows 8.1, Windows 10, Windows 11" -- "Linux" is more like an umbrella term for a whole bunch of OSes.
