And yet, immigration is not entirely unrelated to paying workers a fair wage. If too many immigrants enter a country for what it is able to absorb, there aren'T enough jobs. And what job remain are often lower paid/skilled. But these type of migrants end up driving down the wages of lower paid workers and even begin to affect those in higher wage brackets. It turns into a ripple effect. So I understand why the US would want to limit their numbers.

Doesn't Europe/EU have a similar problem?

A tiny but significant anecdote in relation to your topic: up until the pandemic hit, I worked as a housing support worker for a community-based agency that was apparently very proud of being "a living wage employer," as that claim was part of the block of signature text at the bottom of every single employee's e-mail communications. I took twenty minutes of my own time to do a bit of research and discovered that, no, our income was not considered "a living wage" by official local standards. I brought this up with management, who then brought it up with the Director and the Board. Their solution? They removed the claim from any and all e-mails. We couldn't believe it. They took the easy way out. What a way to secure employee retention! To be fair, they have since increased the starting wage by several bucks an hour. Now, they can claim to be a living wage employer. I don't know if they do so, though, as this happened only after I left and I heard of the salary increase only through the grapevine.

Peter Guerra said he started to hit his breaking point on Saturday, November 13, when digital orders were piling up while a line of customers stretched to the door. He said he didn't have enough workers to meet demand, so he closed the dining room to focus only on digital orders.

He was "in tears" at the thought of facing the same pressure the next day when only one other person was scheduled to work, he said. He had to close the dining room that day, as well.

At the end of his shift on Sunday, November 14, Guerra said he quit.

"I thought, 'this is literally going to kill me if I keep it up,'" Guerra said.
