In 2016 Australia, under a former government, said it wanted diesel electric subs and they opted for a bad design from a French company. The French design was originally a nuclear sub but the French said they'd change it to a diesel electric no problem. In addition Australia found out Communist China had upgraded naval radar which meant it would be very easy for their to locate any diesel sub while it was snorkeling to recharge their batteries. That meant any diesel sub is obsolete against China now. So the new Australian government decided they simply had to go nuclear and that if they were going to do that they wanted the best they could get. That meant a US design with some British electronics plus the US and UK offered super low financing and threw in help with other stuff as well (cyber hacking, information security, AI, etc...).

In short, the French company completely fucked up and their fucked up inadequate product wasn't good enough for the Australians so they decided to cut their loses and buy stuff that was not only better but cheaper and easier to integrate into US, UK, and even Japanese and South Korean ships.

This will also cause a fertilizer shortage.

Now, the UK is going to experience shortages of food and drink because it was so dependent upon US producers of food grade CO2.
