Unlike most cats, though, Chief's behavior isn't a trap.

Cats lay of their back to defend themselves....it frees up all five of their weapons at once (four paws and their mouth).

That is one of the reasons that sometimes dogs and cats do not get along. A dog will see a cat show its belly and....well, you already know the rest.

One of the strays (I call him Chief) will rub against my leg and often when I reach down to pet him he'll roll over to give me his belly. Unlike most cats, though, Chief's behavior isn't a trap. He actually likes belly rubs and if anything just licks my hand when I oblige him.

Like I said... a bunch of sweethearts they are.
Shit, you actually know ‘the trap’ LOL
the ones here are all like hey rub my belly that’s it yeah and they grab you ha ha ha

That's one possible reason.

They can also assume that pose when they're playing, or trying to charm someone into giving them attention, or it's simply a comfortable position in which to nap and they feel safe/secure enough to expose their vulnerable bits while they snooze.

Like he mentioned lol they lie about on their backs all cute and shit with their soft fuzzy bellies exposed, you’d swear they were inviting you for a belly rub and when you do they attack

I will never not skritch the belly floof if it's offered.

If it does turn out to be a trap just remember not to jerk your hand away; that's how people get injured. That can turn a harmless grab or mild puncturing into a legitimate wound and that's 100% the human's fault.

Yeah, I agree.

You gotta look at some other things to know what they are doing....

I worked part time as an animal care attendant at the local shelter for a while and found out that sometimes it is hard to read cats....

They're smarter and more complex than a lot of people give them credit for.

Generally speaking you have to simultaneously take in multiple indicators (tail, hackles, ear position, iris dilation, posture, etc.) to have a good idea of how a cat is feeling or going to react.

I think it makes cats more interesting in some ways but I still love the doggos too; not belittling them in any way.
