I have full sympathy for the children and/or grandchildren of people who violated immigration law; I'm even sympathetic to a percentage of those who broke the law based on a belief that there would never be any consequences for doing so. But those laws have been on the books for a long, long time. They weren't going to go unenforced indefinitely, and I have zero sympathy for those public officials who -- through ineptitude, weakness of character, or malice aforethought -- were derelict in their duty to enforce those laws.
Those who broke those laws as a result of that dereliction were misled.

I'm not sure how you get that from what I wrote. Reagan's passage of the 1986 amnesty was a gut-punch to the U.S. and a flagrant betrayal of American citizens, both native-born and legitimate immigrants alike.
