We're both mothers...the idea that someone would take from you a creature you brought into this world and nurtured, well it tears me up.

It's why I haven't been able to come to terms with the death penalty. I know intellectually it's probably bad, but man take one of my family members...I would want blood.

First, calls her child a "creature".

Then, explains that she would want someone to die if they "took" one of her family members. Because...you know...she is a mother. Meanwhile, the oblivious fuckwit does not consider the fact that the person being put to death has a mother!

So, as a mother, she empathizes and understands the pain of someone losing their "creature". But she has no ability to empathize and understand that the person she wants dead also has a mother who may feel the same about her "creature".

I'm not religious myself, but I hold very Platonic views of the Good and the Right; people do evil things, not because they're intrinsically evil (no human being is) but because they never had a chance to have someone hold their hand and walk with them for a spell on the road to the Good and the Right. At least until that moment when you can walk on that road in the light of your own soul.

I spent the last 25 years of my life working with hardcore hardcases in housing for the homeless, halfway houses for the recently paroled, and for post-hospitalization psychiatric aftercare service providers, and I swear I've seen so much shit that could have made me despair for the salvageability of the human race, but I've also seen darkness turn to light in corners from which I least expected it. Never happens as often as I would hope, but even one single tale of redemption is enough to make me believe that "a life for a life" is just the wrong way to go.

I totally agree. Teaching in very poor communities in the LA area, I saw a lot of despair and darkness. So many people who had been ruined by poverty, by their military service, by brutal crime, by mental health issues. But now and then I also saw that light. In particular, I had a student who had just done 29 years for murder, and he was one of the kindest, most thoughtful people I had ever met. He did his time, and he came out and went back to school at 60 to make himself a better man. We used to talk after class all the time. I'll never forget him. His humility and sense of joy around learning made a huge impact on me and on the other students. And to think he could have been put to death.
