Is it even worth it to buy a desktop computer any more?

Yeah that's why I keep the old pcs around.

Because they can run the old software, printers scanners etc.

You can run most old software and peripherals in the newest version of Windows using a Virtual Machine.

VMware is one of many freeware versions.

Here's one I saw on CL in San Diego for $650:

Please, Log in or Register to view URLs content!

...but if ur interested, get the 2012 model with 12 cores 3 ghz or higher. 2010 model had limitations which prevents users from installing more current software.

As I mentioned above I will not buy anything from Apple.

desktops r ok if u need powerful graphics or r a gamer, r modular and easily upgraded - otherwise, laptop

Laptops or any other integrated circuit PC suffer from the same issues. If the video component goes bust on them, then it's essentially time to throw them out.

This happened on 2 laptops & 1 PC with an integrated board that I bought

I suspect the life of these models these days is 5 years max.

My Dell Desktop only lasted 2 years and 3 months before the motherboard burned out. The quality just isn't very good these days.

Then if you want quality for the PC Windows side, Oerdin, you gotta spend a bit of money these days on custom parts, quality graphics, ram, video cards. and that adds up.

As someone else pointed out, it's $1200 an up for a decent video card.

so maybe a decent PC for $2,000 and up?

that's usually what I see on these YouTube videos.

People making their custom PC's or they sell specialized prebuilt rather than buying brand name computers like Dell.

Okay, Joe gave some decent "poor man's" advice earlier in the thread.

But this....

it's $1200 an up for a decent video card.

is fuckin' ridiculous.

If you are not playing games that require a high performance gaming video card, then it will be absolutely no benefit to have one.

For the vast majority of users, any on-board video will be just fine.

Get a current processor, a decent sized SSD hard drive (I would say a 512Gb is great) for your primary partition, get 12 or 16 Gb of RAM, and you will be amazed at how fast your machine is for general computing.

I always found video or arcade games to be rather boring.

I'm just interested in getting into video editing & CAD/3D for fun.
Adobe Premiere, Photoshop whatever.

I suppose editing a video isn't as intensive as playing a video game, eh?

Or Crypto mining.

Because those acitivites require all guns a blazing 24/7, 16 hous a day

Playing a video game "require all guns a blazing 24/7, 16 hous a day"?!?!?

Hey, what video or arcade games do you remember playing, Joe?

Hey, what video or arcade games do you remember playing, Joe?

Long time ago.

Pac Man donkey kong tetris & a couple of others which are primitive by comparison with today's.
One of them I got free for the Mac - 'Bloodbath', which seems oddly similar to today's games.
It was just like tapping on your mouse or keyboard and blowing someone's brains out.
I just never pursued electronic games because I found them boring and tedious.

I thought pinball was a lot more challenging actually.
Havin ta shoot a real metal ball through some bumpers is much harder than something fake on yer video screen.

I liked how those pinballs would come racing down the middle of the board.
Yeah pinball was really exciting.
But like anything real, it's being phased out.

I even remember when the slot machines were real.
I liked how the symbols would roll around like the cherries and the jackpot.

They were also much more interesting than those fake electronic machines you see in the casinos these days.

...everything is fake now. Even our money!

Pinball was fun.

You do not really have the experience needed to discuss video games intelligently, Joe. Much less PC games in genres like RPG and Adventure games.

Not that more involved games are for everyone, but Pac Man is not gonna give you a good idea of what it is like to play a more advanced game.

You know I bought all this software & hardware & I never got around to installing it because I never had a computer fast or powerful to run them.

But now a lot of it is obsolete cuz I waited too long. I bought Windows 7 ten years ago and finally installed it but now it's no longer supported. Same with Windows 10. Its gonna be replaced soon.

If a person waits too long to install it then sometimes the software companies won't let the user activate them anymore.

I like big monitors, full size keyboards, 5.1 surround sound...

If my main machine was a laptop, I would have to have a spot to plug it in to at least have a big monitor , full size keyboard, and full size mouse....which is just a matter of connecting a few cables...the USB stuff can all be plugged into a hub...you don't even need a docking station.

So I would say if portability is at all a benefit, get a laptop and setup a spot on a desk that you can plugin for times that you want the advantages of a large screen, keyboard, etc..
This ^^^

As someone capable of building my own systems from scratch if I wanted to I like the ability to swap hardware whenever I want (better sound cards -- video cards -- etc etc) and while many of these devices do have their USB counterparts I still like having the power of a desktop with a wide bank of memory slots and PCIe slots available should I want to add some additional functionality.

As it stands now there are 9 laptops, 6 desktops and 4 enterprise class servers in my home office setup right now.

A more sensible & environmentally sound solution would allow people to buy 1 computer or cellphone & swap out the motherboard. Keep the shell, Recycle the insides instead of buying a new unit which fills up the garbage dumps. But of course the computer makers don't allow us to do that.

Anyways I don't see what benefit is of using a 64 bit version of Microsoft Word to type out a letter when Office 97 did the same thing & it looks exactly the same as it did 25 years ago.

I use laptops for work etc but I'm not attached to one. I run two desktops. This one that's just for daily grime and my other which is a powerful beast and runs all my music programs. I wouldn't entrust them to any laptop.

She also seems to be unaware of the vast progress we have seen in the technology. As the hardware changes, the software has to change.

I am not a big fan of Microsoft. They only got their big break because of Gate's mother's business connections. They did not even code the OS that established the company. They were slow to produce graphical interfaces for the OSes and followed the leaders with inferior products. They put out a lot of shit software. They promoted standardized menu system and then threw that out the window when they came out with a dancing fucking paper clip. I could go on an on.

And Bill Gates is obviously not someone anyone should trust.

But whining because they come out with new OS software every 5 or 6 years? What a clueless idiot.

Joe, you know as well as most people that most computer cases are standardized (i.e. not proprietary). The ATX standard has been around for a very long time now. Before that were AT cases.

You can buy ATX motherboards and continue using the case, power supply, and many components.

So how can you say that "the computer makers don't allow us to do that."??!?!

Exactly my point about LettuceButt. Her needs would be something like word processing, e-mail, Web browsing. Someone like her complaining about needing to upgrade is retarded.

I have used them daily at work, and many times in my household. What the fuck do you care, anyway? Do you own Apple stock, or are you shilling for Apple for fucking free?
