Is it even worth it to buy a desktop computer any more?

So my home desktop computer died even though it was only about two years old. I know if I do buy another desktop then it will not be a Dell because the brand just doesn't seem to produce quality products any more. So now I need to figure out if I should just buy another laptop (we already have two and the boys are usually using them) or get a replacement desktop.

Which way would you go and why?

I like big monitors, full size keyboards, 5.1 surround sound...

If my main machine was a laptop, I would have to have a spot to plug it in to at least have a big monitor , full size keyboard, and full size mouse....which is just a matter of connecting a few cables...the USB stuff can all be plugged into a hub...you don't even need a docking station.

So I would say if portability is at all a benefit, get a laptop and setup a spot on a desk that you can plugin for times that you want the advantages of a large screen, keyboard, etc..

My husband and daughters like PC games and all that....but the husband built his.

It's pretty awesome.

I guess that depends on what you do with it.

I was installing an SSD on my father's laptop

It's a Dell Inspiron

These days, fuckers won't even bother with a easy access panel to change disks

Had to take the whole thing apart

And the memory is soldered on the board

It totally depends on how you use your computer. I prefer a desktop for work, because I like a big monitor and a standard keyboard. But if I need to go places with my work, then of course a laptop. I prefer having both, but since I've been in Portugal, I haven't had a desktop. I'll get one when we finally move for the last time.

They do that so you'll just buy another computer.

I never said I wasn't. But I live in Portugal, and as a result, a lot of things are different. Should I be apologizing to you for using too much reality about my location in my posts?

If so, I think we should get after Blazor, who is always talking about the South, and Oerdin, who is always bitching about California, and Omni, who does mention a lot about her location in WA, and of course Smallie, who brags about his "mansion" in Floriduh all the fucking time. There are others, too. I'll send you a more complete list over PM.

No, it was the whole hemmed in ecosystem absolutely locked down by Apple so they could extract money out of companies by selling access to users as if they were cattle. The final straw was when Apple started spying on IPhone users, stealing theor data and photos, not informing users that they were doing it, and even saying they would turn that data over to the government.

I have absolutely nothing to hide but I refuse to buy from a company which does not respect the privacy of its users. Apple has made it clear it will take any and all data and sell it or give it to anyone they please and that you the user have no say in the matter. So fuck Apple.

Last Apple product I had was the Shuffle. Got it on a great deal from Bestbuy's black friday.

It was a good mp3 player, I used it for years and when the battery wouldn't charge, I still managed to sell it to someone who'd fix it.

I had an iMac in the early 2000's, but after Windows XP came out, never looked at a Mac again.

Sure, they're great for people who can live with their smaller ecosystem, although this is probably what makes them safer.

But still, I like freedom. Nothing worse than not being able to use a software or a peripheral because it's not for Apple.

And here in Brazoo, the prices make it even more out of reality for most.

Of course, since we're a retarded bunch of 3rd worlders who drool over this kind of expensive crap, sporting a newer iPhone here will make you popular instantly, especially if you're a young libtard. Who cares if they're made by slave labor in China, who cares if they cost almost a year's worth of minimum wage. No wonder we call them "iPhone socialists" here these days.

Back when I was still married, my ex MIL would bring their old iPhones here. As soon as she left, I'd sell them all. The first one she brought was stolen by some nigger in a motorcycle when my ex-wife was on the street. Yeah, they're like magnets for these lowlifes. So after that, I considered having them an unnecessary risk.

They claim it is "to protect the children" but once they establish they can do things like this it will be expanded to anything and everything they want. With Android an informed person and lock down their phone very well if they want to do so. If you try to do that with an iPhone then Apple will brick your phone and you are out $1000.

Get this model:

s-l400.jpg

the Mac Pro 5,1. 3 ghz or higher.

Has Intel 12 CPU processors on it so it can run Windows 10, eh? Might even be able to run Windows 11 with a hack or Parallels software.

And given that you live in the US, they're probably easy to find.

I bet you could get one used for $500 USD.

If yer into engineering, it'll do.

I loaded a trial version of AUTOCAD the other day & it runs good on only 24 GB of RAM. Never crashed and relatively flawless. Probably needs more RAM tho.

Even if you get another PC, this one can still be a good spare to keep around as a storage backup or future server.

Plus it runs all your legacy PC, Mac or Linux software and many cross platform peripherals. Windows XP/7/8/10 alongside Apple OSX.

...but if ur interested, get the 2012 model with 12 cores 3 ghz or higher. 2010 model had limitations which prevents users from installing more current software.

Laptops or any other integrated circuit PC suffer from the same issues. If the video component goes bust on them, then it's essentially time to throw them out.

This happened on 2 laptops & 1 PC with an integrated board that I bought

I suspect the life of these models these days is 5 years max.

The new technology is scary.

It all has built in spy ware to track it's users.

The old 'dumb phones' were better because they gave their users more freedom.

Yeah that's why I keep the old pcs around.

Because they can run the old software, printers scanners etc.

Truth is there's nothing wrong with the old stuff.

And back then there was so much free stuff & it never expired or needed subscriptions.

I got old versions of photoshop with the black and red labels still works fine. The avg user doesn't need 64 bit or Windows 11 to crop a photo

Everything now is overkill.
