Is Russia just a Modern version of the Mongol Empire?

I've heard this theory promoted before. Even Russians have related this alternate version of history to me.

That the Mongols were never actually conquered but merely merged with the tribes in what is modern day Russia. That it was a marriage of convenience & the Tsars were essentially a creation of the Mongols somewhat along the lines of 2 large corporations which become 1 in order to consolidate power.

The Mongol Khan's became the Tsars.

There was supposedly a battle which took place between the Slavs & Mongols in which the former triumphed. But some say it never happened. That it was just a myth to make the Mongols more acceptable to the local people of that time.

Anyways long story short - this may explain why Russia today still harbors expansionit tendencies & despite being by far the nation with the largest land mass in the world, it still wants to enlarge itself. Just like the Mongol Empire before it which was the largest in history spanning over 10 million sq miles.

So the Mongol Empire never really died. It just became Modern Day Russia.

Are there any merits to this theory?

Has anyone else heard about it?
