Moral of the story, evidently: Religious fervor doesn't always need an actual religion to attach to -- just something which operates nearly enough to one.
Christianity? Islam? Judaism? Who needs 'em when you've got all the other modern -isms that behave the very same way. Communism, socialism, climate alarmism, transgenderism:
If you can get a mob up in arms with torches and pitchforks -- literal or metaphorical -- for the "sin" of dissenting from their dogma, it's a religion.
