...just wondering, cuz I downloaded a trial version from Autodesk called Civil 3D.

ugh, that was a painful experience.
So Kludgy and dinosaurish.
Got it work, but just barely.
I wouldn't wanna use that software every day.

Actually in general, I'm not too fond of these Autodesk programs.
REVIT, AutoCAD, Inventor, etc.
The interface is always too cluttered and confusing.
And it takes so many steps to execute just 1 command.

However, they also probably have 90% of the market share too.

so they treat their users like heroin addicts who are forced to use them.
cant' do without 'em, and ultra expensive too. $300 per month for REVIT?

There must be better alternatives to them.

I'm searching for some, eh.

I am a geologist not an engineer.

Oh.

I thought you might use something like Civil 3D, ArcGIS or Bentley Microstation.

Those applications produce survey and contour maps.

....I thought you might make use of them.

Be interesting if someone can generate 3d maps.

Other than that, it seems rather dry.

Different field I guess.

I use WordPerfect X9 a fair bit.

I know almost everybody has moved to MS Word.

But I can do things in WordPerfect in a few minutes that Word users seem to struggle with for hours and often get stumped.

Old school, eh? Canadian product right?

It was supposed to be good back in the day, better than Word, but Microsoft edged them out with their money and corporate muscle.

Then they got bought out by Corel.

I got a copy on CD somewhere.

Yeah, 2018 is Old School.

Ancient.

The newest version is 2021.

They gotta get on it.

This is who's got the market share of Office software in the US:

WordPerfect doesn't even register as a blip on the screen anymore.

Whereas before they were duking it out with Microsoft.

WordPerfect is the superior product @Joe

I wrote my own accounting software that I have used for several of my businesses.

It has no market share.

I can make it do things that no other accounting software will do.

So you made/have you're own proprietary software, eh?

That's what big post production houses like Industrial light and magic do for special effects eh?

They make their own software.

Tho it's probably more daunting than creating accounting software, tho that would be a challenge too.

I made a lot of people a lot of money @Joe

Cost a lot of people a lot of jobs @Joe

Efficiency is the name of the game @Joe

I know someone who made a 6 figure income just using Microsoft Access to write programs for companies. Mind you there were probably other programming languages or tools he used to get the job done.

I've mostly used SAP Dreamweaver... not for engineering.

Dreamweaver is a nice application.

But a Lotta hardcore Web programmers just hand code their Web pages using free text editors cuz they know/understand coding like the back of their hand.

I'D prefer Dreamweaver too.

I think there's another product out there for Web design called XD.

Anyways @The Prowler, your beloved WordPerfect occupies just 0.14% of the market share these days:

It was a corporate system pieced together from off the shelf SAP and many consultant add ones ranging from the typical WMS to sales/procurement/HR/engineering and with the odd business specific hacks coded in the background.

It was a colossal beast to work with stratas of permissions and a Q mirror for running simulations of changes for testing....ie... "what happens if we implement THESE codes?".

Better to have a parallel system running for that.

WordPerfect is a superior product no matter what the market share @Joe

As far as integrating it into a custom application, though, MS Word most likely has the edge. But I am not sure.

Back in the DDE days I used WordPerfect to generate custom, system-generated documents. I am not sure about their OLE implementation. If I ever have a need, I will look into it and let you know @Joe

I'm sure WordPerfect is superior to MS word Prowler.
Actually A lot of text editing programs are too.
Adobe FrameMaker was too.

Ya'd probaably have liked FrameMaker @The Prowler.
It's about the only word processor where you could actually embed updatable Calculus equations.

AutoCAD files which could be and edited within the program as well.
It has its own programming language and could be linked with databases.
Very sophisticated way out of the league of most people.

It was meant for technical publications, engineers & science writers.
MS word is like your vanilla and fudge software.

Pretty basic
