Nobodies kids are worth my right to bear arms to overthrow the government and repel foreign invaders. Not even my own!!!
Am I the only one who finds this comment absolutely alarming?
You're a more dangerous sort than I had previously thought, Lok.
Arms over life and limb? Even over your own flesh? Seriously?
And Dovey, you keep intimating that the purchase, possession, and use of weapons of local destruction is a
human right. You need to stop doing that, because it's not. It's a United States of America Second Amendment constitutional right. There's a difference. Not a single one of the thirty Articles of the
makes mention of "the right to bear arms."
Give your head a shake, woman.
I have that constitutional 2A right to DEFEND my human rights.
So, just to be clear here, you're defending Lokmar's claim that 2A is of higher worth than the lives of your children?
Have you explained why to your children?
As an outside observer of the Great American Experiment, I look upon the current crop of Militias in the U.S. and they don't appear to be "well regulated." Not to me, at least. But maybe that's because, as Reggie keeps saying, I'm "unfree."
In the end, to my mind, if citizens of a nation are willing to sacrifice that nation's adherence to international standards upholding the Rule of Law in favour of lethal individual remedies to acts violating their fundamental human rights, then that nation has gone rogue. It becomes a country peopled by vigilantes, certainly a far cry from "well regulated Militias."
Again, though, Dovey, take this mild criticism with a grain of salt. The U.S. is
your country, not mine. This constant interplay between 2A and gun control is endlessly fascinating to me as someone who is forever curious about--but not particularly emotionally invested in--how people choose to govern themselves, both as private individuals and as members of a polity.
All this warbling about the Second Amendment by people who aren't Americans (and that would include me, obviously) is ultimately moot. It's a purely domestic issue.
I guess I'm just tired of witnessing yet another round of "our prayers go out to the families affected by this senseless tragedy" without any concrete steps ever being taken to address the problem of gun violence. You know, sometimes "after the fact" prayers just aren't enough. But, again, not only is the ball in your court, but I'm just a spectator here. Please don't mistake my beer-soaked burping for heckling.
Still, I refer you to Articles 3 and 8 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
Article 3
Everyone has the right to life, liberty and security of person.
Article 8
Everyone has the right to an effective remedy by the competent national tribunals for acts violating the fundamental rights granted him by the constitution or by law.
Nowhere are firearms and vigilantism mentioned.
