The US has always been big enough with natural resources to be self contained, its economy was less than 10% foreign trade during industrialisation whereas the UK was nearer 40%.

A lot of the tariffs on US goods go back to Martial aid plan in 1946 to help Japan, UK and Germany rebuild. These should have ended in the 80s.

Trump will us this as leverage against other countries because as stated above the impacts will be minimal in the US. Unlike China who has next to no natural resources and will be shitting bricks. Thats why they are damning up the Yantzee river for energy, they are stuffed.
