There was always a huge party on the Campus of U of M in Ann Arbor every year called Hash Bash. Its been going on for decades. My daughters both went this year....begged me to go with them. I have a hard time with crowds so I sat it out. They had a blast though. They sent us pictures all day and brought us souvenirs lol.

They'll never know the struggles of weeddom in the Jurassic period...

My brother could use one of those hand-held engravers to make a couple holes in a liquor bottle (the ones with a handle worked best), one for the tube and one as a carburetor.

I made a steamroller (was supposed to be a bong but we got impatient) out of a length of PVC pipe. I could barely reach to put one hand on the end because it was so long and almost didn't seal on my face because of its diameter. It was also white, not see-through, so you couldn't really tell how much smoke was accumulating inside.

The first time a friend and I used it he named it O.T. (OverToke).

Damn thing was brutal. LoL

I liked rolling too but my favorite was a small wooden bowl that a friend called Moose made for me. Used that thing for a lot of years. I had a dugout and pinch hitter that I carried around for some time as well. That came in real handy when I was a pizza delivery driver. Heh

I never cared about being a cool mom. It wasn't my job to be cool. It was my job to make them good people. There are plenty of people that they learned bad behavior from. It wasn't me.

Now, I see my daughter being a good mom. My kids explored, weed, other drugs, cigarettes...because all the kids were doing it. I monitored them, but never went through their rooms, backpacks, etc.

They never saw me drink to excess, smoke, etc.

Now they don't do much of anything. My son drinks beer once in a while. I didn't make any typical teenage exploring of boundaries taboo.

I felt it was my job to model responsible behavior. They turned out pretty good.

I never gave a fuck if I was cool.

Interestingly, my daughter's 18th birthday party was in the back yard. It was all dirt. I gave them permission to build a pit. Bought some wood and showed them how to chop wood with an ax. Put some patio chairs around the pit, someone brought a guitar...they started a fire, sang songs, roasted some marshmallows...acted like teens.

I bought pizza, chips, soft drinks, etc...whatever my daughter wanted. I peaked out from indoors periodically, but didn't cramp their style.

As kids were leaving they said it was the best party they had ever been to. I set up the parameters and that included no smoking or drinking. I gave them permission to be the kids that they really still are.

There are decades of being adults coming, I wanted them to be teens. My daughter was thrilled, said it was the best birthday she could have had.
