I know a lot of people I grew up with who have left California due to price (especially people who got married and had kids in their 20's). I also know a lot of success people who left California because of taxes, regulations on business (insurance rates are especially high due to regulations) and simply because they figured out their businesses would do better in lower cost/lower tax states. I knew one couple who owned a brewery and restaurant who just sold everything and moved to NC after the minimum wage got raised five times in four years between state and local politicians.

Between the $30,000 per month rent on co.mercial space for the restaurant/brewery and skyrocketing wage costs going up every year and sometimes multiple times per year, ugly and convoluted state and local business taxes and regulations... It just made the struggle too hard. Last I saw on Facebook they had a new restaurant and brewery set up in NC and business was great because commercial rent was reasonable, the state didn't have stupidly high minimum wages which changed ever few months, while taxes and regulations were more reasonable. Their business is thriving and they are making more than ever while their personal expenses for living went way do. It was the right call for them.
