Group of friends bypass Irish lockdown and drink beer at airport
Four friends successfully bypassed the Irish lockdown to drink beer in a pub. They went to Dublin airport for this.
Ireland was the first European country to implement a new lockdown on Wednesday 21 October. Pubs and restaurants were forced to close. Only take out is possible. Catering establishments at the airport are allowed to remain open. They too must adhere to the 9 euro rule. This measure dates from the spring and was part of the exit strategy at the time. Pubs that want to serve alcohol are only allowed to do so if the customer orders and eats a meal of at least 9 euros. Visiting one cafe after another is no longer possible. The measure may remain in effect in the event of a new catering reopening.
The four friends ate a meal in the airport bar, according to Irish media. Photos of their full glasses ended up on Facebook and often provoked negative reactions. It is unclear how long they sat in the cafe. It is also unknown how they left the airport.
Dublin Airport management is "not amused" and fears imitation. A spokesperson stressed to news site Extra.ie that the foursome had to spend at least 75.96 euros (the sum of the airline tickets and meals) before they could drink their first alcoholic consumption.
They may have delayed the flight they had bought a ticket for. According to the spokesman, it is possible to leave the airport without boarding an aircraft. In any case, individuals who do so have to get past the border police who will ask them a number of questions.
The highest phase of restrictions in Ireland will run until the week of November 21. It is unlikely that the pubs will be allowed to reopen after this.
