We have never had a system that works for this. 1 in 5 Americans suffer from mental illness. Only 46% of them get treatment.

3 strikes is cruel and unusual when you consider the people who were sentenced to life for misdemeanor offenses. So, that’s not gonna work either.

As for your suggestion the homeless be left on the street to die… why should I care when they don’t and are simultaneously terrorizing our community? I am well aware of how many resources are available to them if they actually wanted the help.

The only people who can enable an addict are the people around them. Consequences will not stop an addict from using.

I don’t agree with Oerdin that California made a mistake here because imprisonment only generates small marginal deterrence effects when the sentence is very lengthy to begin with.

It costs $106,000 to incarcerate someone for a year here. Do the math.

Actually, I think it’s a waste of tax payer dollars to force people to be rehabilitated in prison and my state, which is the richest in the nation, agrees with me.

The cost of in patient rehab on average is $6,000-$35,000

The cost of incarceration for 1 year is $106,000… which rehabilitating an inmate would require a 3-5 year sentence.

I’m just better at budget I guess lol

Plus no one wants rapists and murders released because a bunch of otherwise non-violent crack heads are taking up prison space.

If they are court ordered and its enforced they have to complete a program. And A LOT of people recover that way.

Under what is being done NOW? It's made the problem vastly WORSE. Now people are just openly using on the streets. They dont have any incentive to stay in treatment long enough to make a clear decision.

They did it in my city... cops put out high grade heroin on the streets and the junkies overdosed... They killed 75 junkies and the crime rate vanished but that was about 20 yrs ago... They need to do it again.
