When I first went to work at a Toyota Store, I didn't pay hardly any attention to them, just took them as just another small econocar like my old Corolla, until I drove one, and yes it's at heart an an economy car, but those electric motors are amazing. For several years the Prius was the "it car" of the tree hugging techno crowd and we could not keep them in stock, people would wait sometimes months "How about a Corolla Dude?" "6 months possibly? I'll wait" The Tesla is in that spot currently. They were so popular Honda basically gave up and redesigned their poorly designed "Hybrid" and made it into a Prius clone stylistically.

I remember that time when Prius' were the hot ticket.
As for Musk and Tesla...maybe it isn't such a good idea to piss off those that buy your product, especially with competitors nipping at your heels.

One of my grade school buddies just had his old Tesla for sale on FB, if I recall I think he said it cost him about $250 a year to "fuel" up for an entire year
