My grandmother was racist. One time we were driving and she said “oofta it just got dark” as she started to roll up the window.

I was 10ish looking around confused when I realized there was a black man walking down the street. Her side of the family referred to the people next-door as “the Mexicans.” But we liked those people so it was never meant to be derogatory… although it sounded horrific and we eventually asked them to stop. They became more accepting as we got older and brought more brown people around. But it was well known that black was not allowed.

But the racism never resonated with me and the more I was exposed to culture, the more I wanted to dive-in and enjoy them.

My dad was 180 degrees different than my mom. He wasn't bigoted at all. He grew up poor in a migrant farmworker family. They worked in Texas and moved north following crops, all the way up to MI to pick blueberries.

He recalls becoming cognizant of the signs during segregation in the South that against blacks. He said it made him sick and refused to enter those establishments. I think it resonated because whites in south Texas were super racist against Mexicans.

But ignorant asses, like my mom, internalize that shit and then treat even more marginalized people worse. I can't freaking stand racist Latinos...fuck them in their asses with a hot poker.

All the cooks are Mexican here and when one leaves I always tell the other ones "hey tell a family member a jobs opened up" and all they do is laugh about it. And when they start bitching in Spanish I tell them "bruh, I know what the fuck your saying" back at them in Spanish.
