What is life really like for immigrants? Do you want to emigrate?

I suppose i can put it this way. When I came here I knew what I was giving up and I calculated I was gaining more, which was true for a time. But with the pandemic all those gains were lost, more or less overnight.

So you left America for Turkey?
Yep...more for personal reasons than anything else. Otherwise i know it doesnt make sense..lol.

It's only weird because you are just so American lol.

They must have been very important personal reasons.

I've never had a desire to live in any other country. I have plenty that I would visit. But I've never wanted to move from America.

I dont think I would even in the scenario Caskur gave. Leaving my state for a man was messy and emotionally traumatic enough lol

And that was just a long car ride and few DMV trips lol

I always thought a good length of time to visit a foreign country would be two years.

Only two sorts of people want to leave their countries... very, very poor or the very, very rich... middle classes are quite happy to stay in their own country.

Having met a large number of people who left the US for Portugal, AND being one myself, I can tell you that that's just not true.

Something you apparently don't understand is wanderlust. Some people have it, others don't.

That's terrible. So sorry that happened.

But if you stay there, I really encourage you to network. I met about four people through facebook. Just met for coffee or whatever, because of common interests. Through them, and my Portuguese classes, which I also found through facebook, I met about 30 or 40 other English speakers, and now have a very strong, small network of really standup friends.

The pandemic affected everyone. Here, several people went back to the US, but most stayed. Quite a few moved out of the city and into the nearby countryside. We are about to do the same.

It's so much easier to pull out of poverty in America. Shit it's easier being poor in America than most other countries.

I don't think that's true at all anymore.

Maybe we can have a discussion here about immigration that does NOT focus on anyone's hysteria over illegal immigration (that's a whole other topic that I have plenty to say about, and probably not what you think, but let's NOT talk about that here).

What is it like to emigrate to another country, from anywhere, to anywhere, and what are some of the reasons for doing it? What are the challenges? What are the things you learn? What are some of the good experiences? Coming or going, either one.

And does anyone here want to emigrate, but hasn't done so yet?

This shouldn't be a political issue, but I don't want another thread of mine to be moved, so here it is.

I'd be interested in moving to another country to get a 2nd passport.

I don't want completely leave my country Canada, but it would be nice and perhaps fun to have q 2nd option.

Maybe I'll give the EU a whirl. South America'd be a stretch as well.

It'd be fun to adopt a 2nd culture.

I love America. I'd never move to any other country. They're all inferior. There's not a single country anywhere else that has our Bill of Rights which prevents the government to kick down your door and toss you in the clink for any time they deem appropriate. I see the law bust in and arrest people in Australia and England and then their judges impose ridiculous sentences for the most petty things. Speaking out against those governments is a perilous thing to do!

lol, Australia lets off murderers... Puh-leeze. We have to most shit sentencing for crims anywhere in the world.

Speaking of crims, I watched the first USA female serial killer's story Aileen Wuornos, TWICE back to back.

Poor woman... her childhood was sick, sad and thoroughly horrendous.

It is fun. It really makes the world seem smaller and more accessible. It takes awhile to get a passport, though, if you don't have birthrights of some kind. My family have all been in the US for 300-400 years, so I have no claims. (Except my Jewish grandfather. He came way later.)

You know, like "What if I told you I was an alien from Mars." That's a hypothetical.

A hypothetical example is a fictional example that can be used when a speaker is explaining a complicated topic that makes the most sense when it is put into more realistic or relatable terms
