It was still a puppy. You unleash a puppy when chickens are running loose and it's going to chase the chickens. She wanted it for a hunting dog and she didn't train in properly. It did what it thought it should be doing.

Why she couldn't send this dog, and the goat she also shot dead, to a shelter is beyond me.

Beyond the animal cruelty part of this story, is the stupidity of this woman story. She actually thought writing about killing her own animals was a flex.
