I know this has become a suitable arrangment in other countries for ex-pats.

They get paid at what they do, creating their own employment, but same time they don't threaten jobs of the locals.

Portugal and most of the EU also allows this. As long as your employer is not in the country you reside in, you can work as much as you want. Otherwise, you need a different visa.
