Yes, they were very convenient for people who maybe never used a computer but for those of us who were computer users they were also a lot of fun.

The only thing that bothered me was their lack of local storage

Yeah, but you couldn't install/runs programs on it anyway. It was only a thin client for accessing web-based services but, especially in the beginning, it was simultaneously soo much more for the people using them. It had a genuine sense of community..

I remember when I first used DSL. 500 kbits (they loved yelling "10x faster than dialup" on the Verizon ad LOL)
