The failed Dahlgren raid on the capital of the Confederacy had been conceived by Union General Kilpatrick–a commander so wanting in skill and luck his men nicknamed him "Kill-Cavalry." Nothing went as planned and Kilpatrick fought a half-hearted skirmish against Confederate militia. With that, "Kill-Cavalry" fled, abandoning Dahlgren and his men to their fate.
Most of Dahlgren's men would ultimately reach Union lines, but in a freezing rain, the colonel and about 100 men were separated from the rest. On the night of March 2, the Confederates ambushed them and the first volley killed the young colonel.
A 13-year-old member of the Confederate home guard searched the body for valuables and found what would go down in history as the Dahlgren Papers–two folded documents and a pocket notebook. The lad turned his find over to his commander, Capt. Edward Halbach. At daylight on March 3, Halbach looked over the papers and was appalled. "We hope to release the prisoners from Belle Island first & having seen them fairly started we will cross the James River into Richmond, destroying the bridges after us & exhorting the released prisoners to destroy and burn the hateful City & do not allow the Rebel Leader Davis and his traitorous crew to escape."
Until this point, though terribly bloody, the War had been a gentleman's affair, fought by gentlemen's rules, with flags of truce and gallant messages between opposing commanders. The Dahlgren papers seemed a wholesale violation. Richmond newspapers screamed the news of the North's barbarity: "The Last Raid of the Infernals!"
After the war Edwin Stanton (Lincoln’s Sec. of War) acquired the original papers and apparently destroyed them to avoid embarrassment to the government.
Does this sound oh so familiar!? With prisoners released so much this past year, and with all the "peaceful but FIERY protests".
