Homelessness is a problem all throughout the Lower Mainland now. When I was a kid, homelessness didn't even really exist, except maybe in the DTES...

The house in the OP went up $400,000 in just 12 months. When you drop interest rates to zero and print trillions then the price of assets sky rockets while buying power plummets. This is why the average cost of a new car is now $45,000 and low cost ones are about $25,000. In 1988 you could by a crap Hyundai Excel hatch back new from the factory for $5995. In 1982 my parents bought a brand new track home 4 bedroom, 2.5 bath, 2 car garage, on a .25 acres lot 4 miles from the ocean for $27,995. Today that house is probably around $900,000.

When you vote for politicians who run deficits this a major factor in inflation and it is why young people are screwed yet they and their democrat parents never seem to figure even basic stuff out.

Yup. I posted my Grandparents old house as an example of this craziness... $400,000 increase in assessed value in one year.

The average income here for one person is $60,000/year. So the value of that house went up, in one year, the equivalent of working for 6 1/2 years.

I just can't understand how this can be sustained...

There are other issues at play here too though I think. For example, the maximum welfare here will give a single person for renting a place is $375/month. This may have worked many years ago, when a person could rent a shitty apartment in the ghetto areas, and that's exactly what they did.

Now, you will not find a place to rent for $375, even in the ghettos...

We do have subsidized housing here also, but I don't think the average welfare bum from the street would qualify for that... I think it's geared more to low income working people and those with disabilities.
